  4.                         How It All Began......

  8.         WinCNet - Women in Charge Network - was started in November,
  9. 1992, because of the Women's ONLY conference.  Women locally wanted a
  10. conference to have a 'pajama party' without any men.  While there are
  11. many women's conferences across the country, none were local to us here
  12. in RI.  We also found that many women here were not participating in the
  13. BBS world because it is mainly dominated by males and they felt a bit
  14. intimidated.

  16.         Without going into a long dissertation about how it came about,
  17. let me just say that the 'network' was needed when we found we had so
  18. many males behind us in our venture.  We wanted to make them feel
  19. comfortable in our efforts, thus creating The Users Voice - a place
  20. where we all could talk to everyone connected through the various
  21. technologies we are using.  We also wanted to have a place for the
  22. users - a place where they can get a feel of the network and the
  23. boards that carry it - and a place where their voice can be heard.

  25.         We decided that since this net was started by women who are
  26. trying to do something out of the ordinary, the users should be
  27. able to try things also.  So, we have a policy that allows the users
  28. to start their own conferences, host them, promote them, and if they
  29. don't work, we scrap them and go in another direction.  We would like
  30. to have the users take a bigger part of the network than is allowed on
  31. many other nets.

  33.         Our Administrative/SysOp base - LIMITED, was started last year
  34. when I saw a need for a serious SysOp base in the state - a place where
  35. it was safe to say anything without the fear of someone belittling you
  36. for what you believe.  Disagreements are allowed and discussed, but in
  37. a professional manner.

  39.         In just a few short months, the network has grown tremendously.
  40. We are deeply indebted to all those who have made that possible.
